It was 4:10 P.M. when Derrick’s limo dropped him in front of the Marriott on the East Side. While the valet put his bags on the cart, he went inside to the front desk to check in.

“May I help you, sir?” the clerk asked.

“Yes, you may. Reservation for Derrick Reed, please.”

“Yes, Mr. Reed, we have you confirmed with us for two nights. Is that correct?”

“That’s correct.”

“Will you need one key or two?”

“I think you better make it two. And could you please check to see if I have any messages?”

“You have two messages,” she said while punching the keys of her computer. “Would you like to retrieve them when you get to your room?”

“Can you give them to me now?”

“Sure, that’s not a problem. One is from a Ms. Williams. She says good luck with your meeting, and she should make it here to the hotel on time. The second message is also from Ms. Williams,” the clerk said with a smirk on her face, as if she were holding back a smile. “It reads, ‘Don’t look now but there’s a woman behind you with a rose.’ ”

When Derrick turned around, Angela was right behind him holding a single red rose and smiling as if she’d just hit the lottery.

“You’re incredible!” Derrick said as he grabbed her by the waist and lifted her off the floor. “How did you get here before me?”

“Let’s just say I took a few shortcuts,” Angela said. “Now put me down before I have to call security.”

“I should embarrass you by carrying you all the way upstairs after that trick you played on me.”

“Now I’m daring you!”

Derrick turned to the clerk and thanked her for the messages and then instructed the valet to follow him upstairs to his room.

“Could you please get my briefcase off the counter?” Derrick asked the valet. “I’m going to need both hands for this job.”

“Derrick, you have completely lost your mind. I was just kidding. Now put me down!”

“Oh, no, you dared me, remember? So you may as well relax and enjoy the ride.”

Angela was totally embarrassed. The lobby was full of people watching and applauding as they walked onto the elevator. It was a scene right out of An Officer and a Gentleman when Richard Gere walked out of the factory carrying his girlfriend at the end of the movie. As awkward as it was, Angela was loving every minute of it.

When they finally made it to their room, Derrick set her gently on the bed, tipped the valet $5, and went into the bathroom.

“Derrick, I’m going to call Denise real quick to let her know I made it here safely, okay?”

“No problem. Feel free to call whomever you need to.”

After leaving a brief message on Denise’s answering machine, Angela began unpacking her clothes.

“So, how was your trip?” she asked Derrick, who was still in the bathroom.

When he didn’t answer, she knocked on the door to see if he was okay.

“Derrick, are you all right in there?”

“I’m fine, baby,” he said as he opened the door.
